Mulch Calculator
Use this mulch calculator to estimate how much mulch you need for garden beds, tree rings, foundation beds, and landscape refreshes. It converts area and depth into cubic feet, cubic yards, bag counts, and optional cost so you can compare bagged mulch with bulk delivery.
Depth in inches (typical: 2-4 inches)

Typical: 5% for mulch
Cubic Feet
13.13
includes 5% waste
Cubic Yards
0.49
for bulk delivery
Bags Needed
7
at 2 cu ft per bag
Formula:
Cu Yd = Σ(Length × Width × Depth/12) ÷ 27
Assumptions:
- Standard depth: 2-3 inches for maintenance, 3-4 inches for new beds
- One cubic yard covers about 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep
- Waste accounts for settling and uneven distribution

What this mulch calculator does
Use this mulch calculator to estimate how much mulch you need for garden beds, tree rings, foundation beds, and landscape refreshes. It converts area and depth into cubic feet, cubic yards, bag counts, and optional cost so you can compare bagged mulch with bulk delivery.
Material Tally calculators are built for planning conversations with suppliers, contractors, and family members before a project starts. They help you see the difference between exact math and practical buying quantities, including waste factors and rounded purchase units. The result should be treated as a strong planning estimate, then checked against product labels, supplier guidance, and local building requirements.
Best for
- Early material planning before visiting a supplier
- Comparing cost assumptions and waste factors
- Checking whether a project is small enough for bagged or boxed materials
- Creating a clearer shopping list before work begins
How to use the calculator
Enter the bed length and width, or use your measured total square footage if the area is irregular.
Choose the target depth in inches based on whether the bed is new or being refreshed.
Select a bag size if you are buying bagged mulch, or use cubic yards for bulk orders.
Add a waste factor for uneven beds, settling, and curves around plants or edging.
Review cubic yards, cubic feet, bag counts, and optional cost before buying.
How the math works
Mulch volume is calculated by multiplying area by depth converted from inches to feet. The calculator then adds the selected waste factor. Cubic yards are found by dividing cubic feet by 27, while bag counts are calculated by dividing cubic feet by the selected bag size and rounding up.
Planning tips
A 2-inch to 3-inch layer is common for many beds. Too much mulch can hold moisture against stems, trunks, or foundations.
For refresh projects, measure the depth already in the bed and add only what is needed to reach the target depth.
Bulk mulch is often cost-effective for larger projects, while bags are convenient for small beds and touch-ups.
Keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks and plant crowns so bark and stems can dry properly.
